Why is counting to five in German so much cooler than doing so in any other language?

After another coat of color, my hair is still determinedly pink. I’m forced to assume the Manic Panic color I received is pink-in-the-wrong-container. And those of you who know I am SO not a “pink” person know how much this sucks.

The Husband’s doctor called this morning (waking me up, thank yew) to tell him to stop taking the insulin injections. Can I get a WOO FRICKIN HOO from the congregation. He’s changing him to a different pill in the morning and the morning pill moves to the nighttime, so still some meds, just not the pesky injections every day. We’ll continue on with the reduced-carb diet because it does all of us good…we’ll reallyreallyreally miss spaghetti though, especially since I started putting chunks of hot sausage into the sauce. *whine*

This week was BAD on the sinus infection front. Even though I’m already on Cipro, it takes time for it to get in there and kick arse. Headaches requiring darkened rooms and absolute stillness are not a happiness. Things seem to be improving finally though, when a routine run through Target does not leave me gasping and sweating.

One things for sure, we’re having frigging flu shots this fall.

Note to self: The Sarah Connor Chronicles starts tonight. Watch it, in support of Firefly alum, or ignore it knowing that Frigging Fox will cancel it in two weeks anyway? Jerks.

In the past few days I’ve put a goodly number of new blogs on the reading list, subcategoried by interest, so the other people who use my list as *their* list won’t have to slog through the Gardening/Foodie links when all they want are lolcats.

I like WordPress’ integrated Blogroll tool for this, since it makes the subcatting easy, but there’s no native mechanism to show newly updated sites, ie. with Blogrolling.com, which accepts pings through various services when a site updates. There is a WP plugin that purports to do the job, but the resulting errors when attempting to even load the site after installation make that a no-go. So, if you’re a new link and you can’t figure out why I’m hitting your site several times a day, it’s because:

I work from home, and multi-task like a mofo (with an average of 10 Firefox tabs open at any given time, on two separate monitors).

I’ve nothing that shows me your site has actually been updated or not.

I *need* shit to read, people.

So, for all of you who are posting only once a week or so, GET BIZZY.

Updated to add: The Husband had his first sugar crash last night. He got hot, opened up all the windows (it was in the low-40s outside at the time), and then started shaking like a leaf. The kids applied Chips Ahoy and milk and equilibrium was soon restored. It was not a fun time. Stupid diabeetus.

Oh, if I only had the energy, I’d love to write something about the inevitable backlash from household pets over being lolcat-ed. There’d be protests, sit-ins, mournful interviews with the press (“why do you HATE us so??”). Michele, go write that for me, mmkay?

Managed to get the old Pixelpost entries/comments imported yesterday (thanks to this guy’s script, just have to fix the horked up photos/thumbnails, delete the crap entries, etc. etc. His site has given me ideas for my own re-work after the new year, too… *rubs hands gleefully*

Finished up the third part of “Tin Man” last night, and the nicest thing I can say about it is that it was…uneven. Zooey Deschanel is so much better than the acting job she perpetrated in this, in fact, most of them are. Alan Cumming was a bright spot (as always), as was Neal McDonough, he of the icy eyes. I barely recognized him as Lieutenant Hawk from the Star Trek: First Contact movie, because he has dogged out very nicely indeed.

And the worst things I can say about it?

First…the music. Christ-on-a-monkey, the MUSIC. I saw someone describe it as “bombastic” but I don’t think that word is quite strong…or evocative…enough. It was just bloody awful, strident and clangorous when it really didn’t need to be. It’s almost like they were trying to use this basement-produced dreck to patch the threadbareness of the plot. And failing miserably.

Second, the chick who played Azkadellia. I see, Ms. Robertson, that you have quite the career under your belt already. Odd that there are no soap operas in your resume, seeing as how your scene chewing and spastic lip twitches hail straight from daytime-drama land. Sure, you were playing a villain of the broadest scope, but if you haven’t any JOY in your gnawing of the scenery, then you just become an object of vexation. (Re: joy in overacting, see Shater, William.)

Third, their insistence on calling the Outer Zone “the O.Z.” The writers were aware, were they not, that there was a seriously BAD television show on not too long ago called “The O.C.?” And that every single time one of the characters mentioned “the O.Z” we were immediately reminded of that sodding show? If they had just settled for calling it “the Outer Zone” we would have twigged to the acronym on our own. We’re SMRT that way.

Diabetes update – The Husband got checked up with the doc yesterday, who told him he was doing Very Well Indeed, and it was probably ok to go ahead and get his eyes rechecked/glasses redone. Huzzah! Dietarily, he still mourns the loss of his beloved Coca-Cola, but otherwise he hasn’t had much to sacrifice at all, which makes hitting his target blood sugar levels that much easier. Go Husband!

A few months ago (before all this diabetes diagnosis, or even the suspicion of same), the husband’s eyes went south and he had to get his prescription updated. Yes, yes, we know NOW that blurry vision is a symptom of blood sugar issues, but we didn’t know that THEN. Anyway, we paid quite the exorbitant amount for a really good pair of lenses, since he’s glued to a microscope (sort of) all day and needs them. We also purchased a much cheaper pair of plastic lenses and frame (ugly goddamned things, let me tell you) as backups. Then, of course, came the diabetes diagnosis. And now that his blood sugar is getting under control, NEITHER pair of those new glasses work. He can actually see better in short distances WITHOUT glasses, and cannot see through the microscope at all.

So, back to the eye doc for a re-prescriptioning, and in the meantime he can’t even see to work…fortunately he has a decent human being for a boss. But, just xst on a monkey!

Diabetes will never be cured, because it is too freaking profitable.

They sky rained ash yesterday. Little pieces, big pieces. Ash, coming out the sky. Now, since Florida doesn’t have any active volcanoes (that we KNOW of), it’s natural to assume that some farmer is doing a controlled burn to get rid of the godsforsaken palmetto scrub that infests fields like the plague down here. (Yes, I KNOW it’s an important sub-ecosystem, I just don’t give a shit, and wouldn’t either were I a farmer.) Still, when one sees ash raining down from the sky, the lizard brain fairly effectively takes over. Volcano, it insists, run for the hills! And it’s a bit hard not to obey.

Except that we don’t have any hills either.

In other news, the Husband had enough of feeling like crap and took himself off yesterday to visit the doctor. Who was kind enough to diagnose him with Type II Diabetes. So, he’s got pills to pop, diet to change, and perhaps injections to eventually take. They’re still in the “getting a handle on it” phase, which means lots of pricks to the finger.

Which is always better than pricks elsewhere.

Tonight we have a command performance of “Johnny Appleseed, or How The School Manages to Thinly Disguise Yet Another Beg for Money as a Seminal Grade School Experience.” Should be a blast.
