Carrots are one vegetable the entire family agrees on, which is exactly why we have 10 varieties growing right now. We know we love Purple Dragon, and Hercules is quite tasty. Today’s harvest is the Kinko Mini, which only gets about four inches long:

That’s a good 10 oz of carrots there. The flavor is very nice, sweet without the acridity that some varieties have in spades. And, trimmed and washed, it makes a nice subject for the artsy fartsy shots, too:

I love my garden.

It’s less than two weeks til Christmas, and the backyard garden just keeps on giving. This morning’s harvest included Napoli carrots, a Red Cheese pepper, a plethora of Joe’s Round and Thai Hot peppers, two Fresca strawberries, and two stalks of kailan (chinese broccoli – which will be stirfried tonight with this recipe).

The Golden Bantam corn is making ears:

Couldn’t be happier with the Tennis Ball lettuce (a kind of butterhead).

The far right row there is where we scissor harvested a bag for visitors in the past two weeks. It is already replacing the cut leaves. To the left there is a wandering radicchio, and some nearly invisible spinach sprouts.

Here’s the rest of the radicchio, the strawberry spinach (in the middle), and a few regular spinach plants on the left.

The strawberry spinach is DELICIOUS. It has a beautiful nutty flavor, looking forward to it in salads.

Napoli carrots everywhere, and a Girlchild to pluck them:

Oregon Sugar Pod snowpeas are blooming.

Fresca strawberries, sweeter and smaller than fruit bought in the grocery store:

Harvesting the kailan right at flowering. It probably should be taken a bit earlier than that, but it is still completely delicious, right out of the garden (eat the stems like regular broccoli).

So very pleased with the garden this year!

Hmm, first day of December, let’s see what’s going on in the garden!

Well, it looks like this garden doesn’t give a rat’s arse about winter…

That’s snow peas in the back, Belgian White and Dragon Purple carrots on the left, and Kailan (Chinese Broccoli) on the right. Oh, and in the foreground, a pot of Napoli carrots that we’ve been harvesting a few at a time these past few weeks.

It could just be because they’re homegrown, but those are the sweetest carrots you’ve ever tasted. And when the kids fight over who gets first pickings from the garden…WIN!

These pepper plants are seriously confused about their milieu…someone should tell them they’re hot weather plants! On the left, the Marconi just keeps on fruiting AND flowering.

The Romanesco cauliflower just keeps getting bigger:

The tennis ball lettuce is going nuts, and we just can’t wait for it to head, we’re going to have to scissor harvest NOW and just let it grow up again:

You can’t tell the citrus trees that it’s time to stop growing…that’s 21 blooms on one stem on the Meyer lemon there:

The Mr. Stripey tomato is fruiting like crazy. Granted the fruits are ripening at about 1/3 the size they should be but let me tell you that does NOT adversely affect the taste!

And finally, one of the strawflowers I brought up from seed this summer has finally decided to bloom, and what a bloom it is!

So yeah, our December is going GREAT, how about yours?

It rained the entire time we were in <strike>Hell</strike> Pensacola, and the plantsies have rewarded us magnificently…

Up top there is one of the billion creepers the cucumber plant is sending out, desperately grabbing at anything it can find, much like its insane sort-of cousin, the wisteria. The other cucumber plant in that pot, if you listen very closely, is screaming ala Bugs Bunny, “Get me outta heeeere!”

The big plant there on the right is covered, COVERED I say, in blooms and tiny, hairy cucumbers:

The gioia della mensa tomatoes have bloomed and now peel back their blossoms in readiness for fruit:

The pineapple melon plant has blooms-o-plenty already, despite being about six inches tall:

The parisier market carrots are going like mad, no doubt put to shame by the insane population of radishes next door:

The Meyer lemon tree, whilst working dutifully on the existing fruit, has popped out about nine thousand more blooms, awaiting the arrival of the bees:

And how are the peas doing, you ask?

Let’s just say they learn well.

*Movie quote…who can guess it WITHOUT GOOGLING?
