Another Day of Rest was decreed for today, which was deuced smart timing our part seeing as how it has Rained All Day. We read books, poked around on the Intarwebz, played with the bebe kitty, watched cheesy movies, and cooked a lovely turkey breast with sage and thyme stuffed under the skin. Now we note with mild surprise that it is nearly eight of the clock, and we’ve accomplished nothing more profound today than relaxing.

Oughta be a law or something.

P.S. Want to know how to attract dragonflies, and get them to pose for your pictures? Put out random garden stakes, or any vertical stick-type thing at all, really. They’re apparently not so picky what it’s made of, as long as it is vertical-ish.

*

I’ve been off Starbuck’s mochas (cold turkey, people) since the Husband was declared diabetic. Honestly, I do not miss them. My daily coffee is Gevalia’s Caffe Greco and is so much more flavorful than that Seattle-roast swill.

*

I have waxed rhapsodic before regarding Jacqeline Carey’s Kushiel series, just finished the brand-new Kushiel’s Mercy (#6)…

…which then sent me back to read Kushiel’s Avatar (#3)…

As frightening and harsh as the journey is sometimes, this is a slightly alternate universe I delight in visiting (and revisiting), where the scions of angels walk, and Love as Thou Wilt is the guiding tenet.

*

Monty Python is not nearly as funny today as it was when I was 10 years old.

You’ll have to pardon me, sometimes I actually *gasp* blog about things that have nothing to do with gardening.

Shocking, I know.

We went out on photosafari Monday. Well, technically we were Geocaching, but the four mile hike…at midday…in 90 degree Florida heat…made us call it a day when we finally staggered back to the car.

Because I am, after all, me…I managed to take well over 400 pictures during that stagger walk. I always take that many though, especially when wildlife is in play, because I shoot digital and CAN, and because, like Forrest Gump, you never know what you’re going to get. Taking way too many pictures ensures I do not miss out on whatever I’m shooting at, and the dregs can easily be dumped in my post-production routine. With 4GB flash cards these days, even shooting in RAW format I can pack nearly 700 images on a single card. And we always carry more than one card.

Innyhoo, from 400 images, I deemed about 25 of them to be keepers, and if pressed, would probably only print about five. All that processing sounds more daunting than it is, but really, do not be afraid. Setting up a workflow, and sticking with it, is key. Here’s what works for me:

Download images via card reader to a folder named after the day’s date (ie. 5.27.08)

Open Bibble Lite for the RAW processing.

Tick the Noise Ninja option on EVERY image, leaving the setting at about 8

Tick the sharpening option on every image, setting about 100

Using the Focus Window Cursor, you can quickly run through your images, checking for focus areas (preview pane is in the lower right side, under the slider settings). Delete what doesn’t meet your standards, and go back to the remainder when complete.

Crop the image as desired, if necessary, being sure to maintain the ratio it came out of your camera, in my case 4×6. In using Bibble, this is done via Tools -> Basic -> Rotate-Crop. You can also rotate the crop itself (ie. for vertical) using this tool. Yes, nearly every image I wind up keeping is a crop of the OOTC (out of the camera) image. There is no shame in this. Working with digital, you are snapfiring, getting all the coverage you can, precisely so you can go back and find the very best image later when you have time. There’s nothing wrong with this and anyone who says otherwise is just being snob.

I typically adjust the color curves at this point, using the Advanced tab. Drag the lower left arrow a little to the right, then drag the upper right arrow a little to the left. Especially in overexposed images, this will add *pop* to the color and depth.

Save the image: File -> Save As. I usually save everything as 8-bit JPEGs, which is more than good enough for printing.

Now, Bibble can’t fix everything. It does have a Spot Heal brush, which can effect basic repairs if you have water spots or dust on your lens/CCD, but it’s kind of clumsy. I prefer Photoshop’s Clone Stamp Tool to fix those sorts of things. But if you do not have the resources to have both Bibble and Photoshop, keep your gear cleaner than I do mine and you should be fine.

Photoshop has many other talents, of course. One day I shall tell you how this…

…became this:

Nighty night!

I’ve spent the last four days or so going through every photograph we’ve taken lately (digital), with an eye towards pulling out those worthy of printing and/or showing.Flickr says we’ve posted a bit over two thousand images since starting up that account in late November of 2005. I post photos on Flickr I would never/ever dream of printing/showing, primarily because it’s a nice way to keep track of things, such as our observed Bird Species (88 and counting), and because I am often FAR more critical of our work than the general public might be, therefore the feedback I get there is very useful. (Sometimes.)

Now, I shoot a ratio of roughly 10 to 1 (that’s 10 photos for every 1 I keep), Husband shoots about 5 to 1. So, extrapolating from there (and assuming a 70/30 me/him ratio, since I’m the one who has the camera at home during the day), we’ve taken about SEVENTEEN THOUSAND digital images since we’ve owned the really good Nikon.

That said, guess how many the Husband and I deemed worthy of printing and/or showing?

About 100.

I’m not sure what that says about us…

—

In other news, we returned home from picking up the kiddos today to find that Zoe had brought me the Boy’s magic wand. For the first time since she started bringing things to me, I think I’m a little frightened…

Always good to know.
